Would a 36F sleeping bag cut it for the Kearsarge to Whitney leg of the JMT around late July?

Or am I better off with a bag with a lower rating (closer to 0-10F) ? I have a Kelty 0 Degree bag, but I really want to avoid take that as it weighs in at 4 lbs and occupies a ton of space (even when fully compressed) in my backpack.

Thanks.

Unless you are solo camping above 12K feet on a snow field without a tent or shelter I cannot imagine a need for a 0 or 10 degree Fahrenheit bag.

I camped just fine in mid July at Whitney Portal and Trail Camp (elev 12,000feet) with a 30 degree down bag. Avoid camping on snow.

If I were to do it again, I would take my 40 degree quilt.  Have you checked any of the many online weather tools for the lowest nighttime temps on your route? Here is just one: https://www.mountain-forecast.com

It depends on whether you mean a bag rated to 36 degrees or one that you know is comfortable for you at 36 degrees with minimal clothing. The answer to the first question is – it depends on how warm that bag keeps YOU. The answer to the second question is you should be fine, On the coldest nights you can wear some clothing to bed.

It depends on how warm/cold you sleep. I sleep like an ice cube these days (60 yr old and skinny).
