Since I typically do 3-4 night trips everywhere I go, I was looking at purchasing a bear container.

If I stick to a 1.5lbs of food per day or less, is it possible to fit everything I need in the Scout or do I need to look into sizing up to the weekender?

Make a mock-up out of cardboard with the dimensions of the scout. See if what you eat on your trips will fit. 1.5 pounds per day gives no insight as to volume required.

I can just barely fit 5 days of food in my Bearikade Scout.
However, everyone's food choices are different, and results may vary.

I can fit 5 days of food in my Scout but like the previous poster said every one has different food choices and needs. In addition to my my Scout I use a "Food of the day bag" which is also my bear bag. I will have any as one or two days of food in that bag and just string it up in a tree(PCT Method). The food of the day bag gives me a little bit more wiggle room on extra food and is easy to get into versus the Bearikade Scout which is at the bottom of my pack. I did own a Expedition but found it to heavy and big to get in and out of my pack for just a 2-3 day trip…I really like the size and weight of the Scout.

Everyone,

Thanks for the insight. I guess a mock-up is probably the best way to go. I'm still torn between the Bearikade and Ursack. I can save both money and weight with the Ursack.

Anyways, my typical daily menu consits of the following:

Breakfast:
Option 1
-2 Instant Oatmeal packages (Varying Flavors)
-VIA Coffe Stick

Option 1
-ZipLoc Bag Powedered Milk & Gronola
-VIA Coffe Stick

Snack 1:
-Clif Proten Bar
-Propel Drink Mix (stick)

Lunch:
-2.6oz Bag of White Tuna
-3X Tortillas
-Packet of Hot Sauce
-Packet of Mayo
-Packet of Sweet Relish
-Packet of Olvie Oil
-Packet of Lemon Juice (For Water)
-Propel Drink Mix (stick)

Snack 2:
Option 1
-Clif Proten Bar
-Propel Drink Mix (stick)

Option 2
-Wal Mart Trail Mix, Repackaged In Zip Loc

Dinner:
-Single Serving Mountain House (Or Equivelent)
-VIA Coffe Stick (depends on mood)

Snack 3:
-Packet Dark Chocolate Dreams Paenut Butter 1.15 ounces
-Packet of Grape Jelly (Type From McDonalds)

Most of this packs small and easily meets my 1.5lbs of food per day requirment. I'm usually well under though. I think my last trip I was right around 17-18 ounces a day with this menu.

If ALL your meals are home-prepared "freezer bag" meals you'll have less bulk and be able to carry about 25% more meals.

Plus "freezer bag" meals are not only cheaper and better tasting (by far) they are far lower in sodium than standard freeze dried backpacker meals.
Buy the book and soon you'll be making up your own meal concoctions.

Don't forget to make and carry a freezer bag insulating cozy to hold the hot bags & help them "cook" better. I made one from fleece & Velcro closure. It's light and works well in all seasons. I've even seen them made from auto windshield sunhades.

I agree with you that they pack lighter and are healthier. That said, I do both. I have a dehydrator and prepare a lot of my own meals, but I also try to only prepare one hot meal a day as well and that is for dinner only.

Most of the time, for convinence-sake, I'll even repack the 2 serving mountain house meals into 2 freezer bags.

I also have a few books like:
-Backpack Gourmet
-A fork In The Trail
-Leave no Crumbs

For tons of meal ideas.

I just got back from a 6-day trip in Yosemite with my Scout.

As I was meeting my brother-in-law Dave the evening of day 4 and he wanted to share the Scout what I did was load 6 days worth of breakfasts and lunches, plus electrolyte snacks (Shot Bloks, Sport Beans) drink mixes, booze and fuel along with two freeze-dried dinners in the Scout starting out. I carried the first night's meal out.

When I met Dave he had my two dinners and all his stuff for the next two days. (He did not need to store that nights of course.

I would guess that I could have put a 4-5 day menu in it depending on how much "extras" I wanted along.
