Terra Nova claims that their new Laser Ultra 1 is the “lightest double-wall shelter in the world.” I disagree. Leave the beak at home, and this tent is lighter.

Plus, there are a lot of bug-bivy/tarp combinations (which would qualify as a double walled tent in my book) that are lighter. There are a bunch of possibilities out there (especially from MLD). Now I’m curious: What double walled gear have people used and how low have you managed to go?

Terra Nova definition includes the qualifier "commercially available".
Exactly what is meant by that is debatable (if you don't have acess to the rules)
From memory TN described "tent" (for the Guinness WR) as a fully enclosed double wall shelter. If you leave the beak off the HMG shelter (and most tarp/bivvy combos) it would not be within that definition.
Also from memory the weight has to include the required pegs/stakes . Hence the 1 g TN version.

In my personal definition, it doesn't count if you can't at least sit up in it. 34" tall is more like a bivy than a tent.

+1 Dan.

I was discussing this w/a local UL retailer today and we both had the same sentiment in regards to this TN tent.

If one is going to use a tent that is 34" tall, it seems that a bivy is going to be less hassle in the long run – even if it weighs a few ounces more.

Some of you could sit up in a 34" shelter. Not on a pad likely, but you could. I am 6'1" and can sit up in the middle of an Akto at 36".

Hi Ross,

Thanks for the nice feedback and FYI, unlike some manufactures all of the seams on the HMG shelters are water tight. We have worked very hard to develop techniques to insure water tight as well as UV resistant seams. This is 2010,

Our Echo I shelters pitch at an optional pole height of 46 1/2" which puts the insert height at 38". I chose this number so that it does allow just enough room for sitting up as long as the tarp is pitched appropriately. When pitching our shelters once I get the tarps stakes roughed in I stake down the floor of the insert and adjust the pole height to tighten the insert, then lock everything down.

It's kind of like their 1 gram tent stakes. How good could they really work? My thoughts are who really cares how light your product is unless it works as intended and its built to last.

Cheers,
Lawson

The 1g stakes might not work so well, but I like their 2g stakes. They've been working well for me. I've never bent one yet and the holding power is reasonable.
