Hi-
So, I have been using a GoLite Cave 2 for about 8 years now and have always been mostly happy with it (it's always kept me dry), but I am considering upgrading. I am intrigued by the Hexamid, but I have some concerns.
I should also say that I am not a winter backpacker. I'm not opposed to it, but I've never really done it.
Why switch? The Hexamid would be lighter (and more expensive) than my Cave 2. At 8.2 oz, it would beat my Cave (1 lb 2 oz) by enough to consider it, but the Hexamid would add bug protection at that weight. The Cave has a bug net that I hang from it sometimes, but it is extremely awkward to get in and out of and is relatively heavy (roughly 1 lb). I usually leave it at home and rely on the fact that bugs don't like me.
What to worry about?
1) The Hexamid is solo. Will I feel cramped in the Hexamid? Can anyone attest to its spaciousness?
2) The Hexamid has netting beneath you. Will it hold up? Anyone know?
3) I've never even seen cuben fiber before. What is this stuff? Will it require special care? How will it behave compared to the sil-nylon I am used to?
4) The Hexamid appears to require a trekking pole (which I've never used before). I am open to bringing one (since I will still be lighter than my Cave and will have the use of it for other purposes), but I'd like to have the option to tie the peak to a tree or use a stick or something if I don't feel the trekking pole is worth carrying. Any ideas? Also, is there a pole that works only as a tent pole that would be lighter than a trekking pole?
These are some of my current dilemmas. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Wayne
