I was playing “what if” with sleeping pads and saw the Insulmat Uber Micro pad, advertized at 3oz. When I took a closer look, I saw that the Insulmat is a lot smaller than my usual RidgeRest short pad. After doing the math, I estimated that a RidgeRest cut down to the same dimensions as the Insulmat should weigh 5.9oz rather than the “full size” 9oz, making it just 2.9oz more than the Uber Micro. Even this comarison is using straight lines rather than the hourglass shape of the Insulmat.
[Waving my finger] You gotta make good comparisons!
So, I’ve got an old REI 50th Anniversary pad (a wretched yellow color) I’m going to chop down to the Uber Micro dimensions and see how it fits— 17″ wide sounds skinny. I may go more like 40″ long– I measured from shoulder to knee and one or the other is going to lose at 37″.
Update: so I took a cutter to the ol’ REI pad and cut it down to 36″x18″ and by golly, it comes in at 4.2oz. I tried it out on the basement floor and it sure doesn’t leave much for “overhang.” I would be putting my pack and extra clothes under my legs for sure. It is a cheap way to knock most of 5oz off my base weight and it sure saves a lot of room. I’m not sure I would make the best company for breakfast the next morning :)
