I've tried to figure this out on my own for quite some time now but to no avail. I'm missing something, perhaps something very simple.
The concept of a poncho tarp is very intriguing to me, as it would eliminate the need for a rain jacket and rain pants, which could be up to a pound or more in weight!
But what I don't get is this:
Say it's raining really heavily and I've finished hiking in terrible conditions for the day and I want to bunker down. To set up my tarp I'd have to take off my poncho and in the meantime get very wet setting up camp. And as fast as possible after I have to throw all my gear under the tarp (which is generally pretty small) and then be wet inside as I set up.
Is that simply the trade off of the poncho tarp? I have to take it off and get wet while I set up camp? I've set up camp in the rain before in the past, and I can bet on doing it again in the future. Please enlighten me.
