The best available today is Tramping In New Zealand, by Lonely Planet. A great resource.

My travels abroad are "hosteling" type trips with occasional hikes out in the wilds. For this type of trips, Lonely Planet guidebooks are also one of the very best!

The Lp book is v.good. It has small maps and lots of useful information on the logistics of doing the tramps and covers all of NZ quite comprehensively.

I would also check out Classic Tramping in New Zealand by Shaun Barnett and Rob Brown and Classic Walks by Craig Potton for great photos and some inspiration.

Others are Bird's Eye Guide: Tramping in New Zealand 40 Great New Zealand Tramping Trips by Shaun Barnett, North Island Weekend Tramps by Shaun Barnett and an equivalent South Island version by Nick groves.
