How do you pack your beer can pot (Heineken, Fosters, or other) to prevent damage?

One way is to use a plastic cup or other rigid container, but that adds as much or more weight than the pot itself.

Hey Andy, I think the Heineken is the best to pack because of the "Ribs" of the can.. I pack mine on the outside of my backpack–I am just extra careful with it. No failures so far. I have brought in full ones(Heineken)

and then used it as my pot too…Beer and water boil just fine….

I load my whole cook kit and other 'fillers' to fill it out then slide it into a refletex cozy and into my outside water bottle holder. wal-la quick access.

from a second can, cut the bottom section off, just below the bottom rib and use it as a friction fit lid — slipping over the top of your pot. while really the same diameter as the top portion of the can (above the top rib) it will still slip on. this snug fitting lid restores a significant amount strength back to the can while also doubling as a cooking lid (when loosely set on top the can). i drill two holes in the top and loop a small plastic wire tie through to act as a little handle when cooking. works like a charm.

also need to note that, unlike those who use the safety cutter device, my homemade pots are cut well below the crimped top rim, about a 1/4" above the top rib allowing for the lid mentioned above to fit the pot

I just fill it with my mini BIC, KFC spork, 1oz wing stove, .5 oz fuel tab, soap vial and Ti wind screen with paper clip and no lid and toss it in the top of my pack. If you remove the lid with a safecut can opener it leaves the reinforcing strip at the rim intact. Sometimes the can gets dented so I straighten it with my fingers. Never had a problem with a can failing. If it ever did…I guess I'd just have to drink another can of Heineken.
