Anyone ever tried these as opposed to the Sliver Grippers?

Sweezers
Sweezer

Being made out of aluminum rather than stainless it seems they could be lighter if there isn’t an over abundance of material used. I’ve emailed the manufacturer in hopes that they’ll shoot me a weight but I’m putting the question out to the BPL community too in case someone has already looked into these. Are these lighter/better than the Sliver Gripper?

So it took no less than 9 emails back and forth but I did manage to get a weight from Sweezers. They claim they weigh 0.02 ounces or 0.56 grams! That beats the pants off of my sliver grippers if in fact it is true. I could always move my sliver grippers to my carry-on travel kit and keep the Sweezers for the back country so I just might give these a whirl.

what's a tweezer for in the backcountry? ticks and thorns?

the smallest swiss army knife I carry comes with a tiny one that seems sufficient for ticks..

Yes, ticks, splinters, thorns, etc. I keep some tweezers in my first aid kit since the weight penalty is so low and the utility so high. I am always willing to shave 5 grams off my setup if I can though! That and I enjoy the challenge of continually shaving weight especially in places where most folks don’t look.

I found a British site that has them even cheaper delivered, I paid $17.40 delivered.

Beauty Bay – Sweezer

As soon as I get them, I’ll toss them on my microgram precision scale at work and post up the true actual weight. I like having access to a $2,000 scale for precise measurements!

Picture says it all. They are not even remotely close to 0.5 grams! Save yourself the trouble and just use Sliver Grippers!

Wow, that's a lot of digits on that scale! I looked up Mettle Toledo, but all of their scales had too many digits in their price also.

It is WAY too expensive for a hobbyist but having sweet geek equipment at work is an excellent fringe benefit for an engineer! This scale ran us $1,500. You know you're looking at a big-boy scale if it has a draft guard around the weighing pan.

Chris
No offence, but since you have access to a "$2000" scale I thought that you might have a better idea of
what .5g really is . How can something like that weigh .5g ?
In my mind the "Sweezer" people did not lie to you, they just got the decimal to ounce conversion wrong.
5.89 g is .2oz, not .02 oz. However to a metric person .2 or .02 of an ounce is all the same.

Franco,

No worries and sorry my estimating skills aren't up to your standards. I confirmed with the rep twice that it was 0.02 ounces and not some other unit or value and he was firm so I took a chance. I'm out $15 so no major loss. But I did purchase their product under false pretenses since I emphasized I was after one feature and one feature only.

If you clip your toe and fingernails before heading out, the weight difference might just be a wash! :D
