I was looking at gear in a mass market sports store this wekend and saw that all the new GSI cooking gear has the pack weight on the lable, down to a tenth of an ounce. I see that as a postive shift in the market– more please!

I will not buy a piece of gear unless I know that the weight is listed. If not, then I will look for a scale in the store. If there is none and I have no idea then I will not purchase the item. I will usually look it up on the net to see if I can get the weight. That is great that maybe attitudes are shifting!!!

I bought a small scale that measures from 1g up to about 6lbs and fits in my pocket quite nicely.

I take it to stores when I’m checking out gear.

I still would like to pick up a bigger scale for home use for those lofty, bulky items that are tippy on that scale.

Do you weigh multiple versions of the same item to account for production variances? I’m wondering how much difference there is.

Dan – That sounds excellent! Where might I find one of these small accurate scales and how much do they cost?

Jordan – If it were me, I’d weigh 3 items and average.

That is a great idea. I have two scales at home. One that is a fishing scale that has a hook and it is digital. Comes in handy when weighing a pack with a full load. The second one that I have is a digital scale that I weigh small pieces of gear.
