I have a buddy who can sow me a tarp from ripstop nylon. He prefers to sow square only no tappers. I am looking for a common size to give him to sow for me so what I want to know is what is the most common size for a tarp that I can either solo with and still get two people under. I also want to use this tarp for a place to eat and cook under when I am group camping. Is a 5×10 a good size or 5×8?

If it HAS to be square, then a 7'x9' would be marginal for two, and 8'x10' would be better (please don't kick me out of BPL for this non-UL suggestion!). Or you could figure out how to use two 5'x9's together for more versatility. I have always found 8' to be a little too short on one end or the other.

8'x10' will work fine for going with a buddy, will work great for cooking under, and great for going solo, if you don't mind that it is heavier than a solo tarp, in which case you will have ample room to do whatever.

good luck!

5x__ stinks, def. not 2 people. 8 x 10 much better. I'm guessing you mention the 5x because he could eliminate a seam, but it's not worth it. Just add a single center seam.

x4 on the 8×10. It is one of the most popular tarp sizes with good reason. Perfect for two, and extra roomy as a solo shelter.
