Mitchell, in a few weeks I'll post up some more details on the process once I've actually done it in the MYOG section. I'm waiting on glue still before I can start. That should arrive this week and then it'll likely take several weeks to make since it'll gluing one seam at a time and then waiting a day for it to dry.
Here's a bit of preliminary info.
The Quarterdome T2 breaks down like this from REI:
Fly: 650g / 23oz.
Poles: 450g / 16oz
Inner Tent: 596g / 21oz.
Stakes: 3oz
Tent Bag: 3oz
TOTAL TRAILWEIGHT: 4.1 lbs
The Fibraplex poles weigh 8 grains per inch versus 18.5 grains per inch for the original DAC poles but some parts of the poles (tips, inner shock cord) won't be as big of a savings, so overall I'm estimating my new carbon poles at about half of 450g or 225g (8oz).
For the fly, I'm using olive CT2K.08 cuben (0.747oz/yd) and my rough measurements are that I'll need 200g / 7oz worth but it could range from 6-8oz. I'm using two 36" #5 waterproof/uretek zippers from QuestOutfitters which weigh ~50g total including sliders and stops. I figure another ounce for misc stuff (corner tie outs, 6 grommets needed to attach it to the poles) and the total is going to be somewhere in the 9-11 oz range (versus 23oz for the original fly).
So the trail weight of my T2 is estimated at:
Fly: 10oz
Poles: 8oz
Inner Tent: 21oz
Stakes: 1oz
Cuben Tent Bag: 0.5oz
Silnylon Stake Bag: 0.2oz
EST. TRAIL WEIGHT: 40.7oz or 2.54 lbs
Ounces saved: ~25
Est. Cost per ounce saved: $15-$20
If you're mostly just camping by yourself but want a bigger tent then you could just buy the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 for the same weight but less money. My tent is obviously going to cost more than the Big Agnes ($150 tent on eBay, ~$250 fly, $150 poles is $550) but it is also freestanding, larger floor, way more headroom and dual doors and vestibules for a similar weight. It doesn't really make practical sense to spend all this money for the weight savings, but it's a hobby and it's a lot cheaper than a drug or alcohol addition.
