Hey all, been thinking about getting this. I want more of a sip and go experience than a bladder and the weight of water. I have used the Frontier Pro and it is not bad but I can never get the thing to screw onto my platy tightly enough to not get water on me. No big deal there just an annoyance. I want to buy the Katadyn but was wondering how would this be used for getting cooking water etc. I am trying to think outside the box so that this is my go to water treatment. Or should I just stick with my Frontier Pro?

Ken:
Having used the FP for almost 3 years now, I've never had a leak between the bottle and the filter. I've connected with a Platy hydration tube — and I've also just screwed the FP onto the Platy bottle directly. No problems.
Methinks your FP is either defective or you've over tightened it and ruined the threads early on.
If you like the setup, I highly recommend buying another FP. Google around for discounts.
I haven't tried the Katadyn — mainly because it leaves chemical treatment (iodine resin) to last. I think I prefer filtering/adsorption to come after chemical treatment — to remove those chemicals along with other impurities.
Last year, I purchased a similar product from Aqua Mira. Didn't even use it on the trail — I didn't like that filter was a separate part that could be misplaced, and the filter seemed poorly made. Plus, it only held 22 ounces (before filter displacement).
My plan was to use the filter bottle on the trail, and tablets in an Evernew bladder for camp.
This year, I'm using a SteriPen for trail water…
I own a MyBottle. The filter is very well constructed. The one realy downside is that it is heavy. The convenience can't be beat though. It does what a Steripen alone won't – including a carbon filter section that will filter out chemicals that may be in the water from ie human industry upstream. The carbon also makes the water taste better. Also, it DOESN'T leave iodine to the last- it is the middle stage. The carbon filter is after it, and apparently filters most of it out. Can't taste it.
That said, I also have a Steripen, and I'm going to experiment with a combination of coffee prefilter -> Steripen -> bottle with a built-in carbon filter ONLY. This combo should still be several ounces lighter than the MyBottle. Not sure if it's worth losing the convenience though.
