I recently discovered that if REI carries one item from a manufacturer, you can special order other items from that same manufacturer. What surprised me even more was to find out that normal REI return policy still applies, as does your dividend. I double-checked to ensure no misunderstanding about being able to return a special order.

I presume that my discovery generalizes, and that it is not something unusual about what I was interested in. The way they talked, it seemed like a general policy. I discovered it because I am interested in a canoe model they do not list in their catalog. The sales guy suggested I special order it. I responded that I was reluctant to special order a canoe without first being able to touch it and (preferably) paddle it. That's when I got my real surprise — I could special order it, try it out, and if I did not like it I could return it — even though it is a special order.

Another note that may interest some — coupon applicability — in the current sale, the 20% coupon explicitly rules out special orders. I checked, and other relevant coupons *are* usable for special orders.

This is a great piece of information to know. Thanks for sharing this. Next time I want a pack and they don't have that one (but another by the same manu.), I can just special order it. Awesome.

Further inquiry should probably be made before special ordering through REI. I've talked to them about it before was informed that it can take up to several months for special orders to come in.

Any retailer should be able to order anything made by a company they have an account with. Most likely a locally-owned gear shop will special order things and get them within a week. Some will charge you for shipping, some will not.

I used to work with a distributor for motorcycle parts and accessories. Special orders will vary widely from company to company. I'm sure there are some manufacturers who can rocket something out UPS in less than a week, but some might build to order and take a few weeks, or months. It really depends on the manufacturer.

Best bet is to ask REI on a case to case basis. They will either have an idea of, or be able to find out, how long a special order would take from a particular manufacturer.

I would agree that you need to confirm with REI — but you do that anyway in trying to place the order.

Just to be clear in what I was saying — I was talking about other stock items from a manufacturer that REI already deals with. They were quite clear about that.

We are talking about a special order from REI (in that they do not carry it in their catalog). We are not talking about something that will be a special order for the manufacturer. I have no insight into how well the latter may, or may not, work.
