I just tried out the NorthFace Rucksack this weekend. Seems to be a great, full featured pack for less than 12oz.

Only problem is, it needs a sternum strap bad. I seem to remember I guy on the BPL forums offering a sternum strap that could be added to packs. He named it something sort of comical (ie best sternum strap ever). Can anyone point me in the right direction?

MLD carries the sternum strap you mention. I have a spare/extra that I can send to you – free. PM your ship info if interested.

Thanks guys that is the strap I was refering to but I don't think it will work. Looks like the strap is designed to hook on 3/4in webbing as it runs over the face of the shoulder strap. The only problem is that the TNF Flywieght Rucksack has no such webbing on the upper portions of the shoulders.

Here is a link to another BPL post on the same pack with pics of the shoulder straps:

It's gonna have to be a sternum strap that can be sewn on. I'd assume I could cut the end buckles off the MLD sternum strap and then sew it on.

You can build one out of standard hardware and use ladder locks, looping the web around the pads on your shoulder straps and no sewing needed. If you have vertical runners on top of the pads, the straps from ChicoBag have diagonal slots to do retrofit installs. I made one up with a whistle buckle and the ladder locks described above. PM me if interested. I'll try to dig it out and post a photo tonight. If you have access to backpack hardware, it is a 10 minute job to make one.

Liberty Mountain makes Buckle ends and other fittings designed to fit over existing straps , even the kind which are usually sewn on for repair in the field. You can see many of them at Amazon. Very cheap. Just look at the whole category for the manufacturer.

I made one for $1.57 worth of materials from OWFINC.com

1/2" grosgrain
1/2" elastic
1/2" contoured pet cord lock

Lots of material left over to fiddle with :-)
