Hi Nick. Where are you located? The easiest access from Tulsa is the Greenleaf Hiking Trail. Other ideas include Ouachita Trail and the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.
For Scouts there are a couple of other places especially the Lake-to-Lake Trail and the Osage Trail between Osage Hills SP and Camp McClintock.
Then there is Arkansas. There are many great hikes in AR. My favorites are the Ozark Highlands Trail and the Buffalo River Trail. Tim Ernst's books provide many other options.
P.S. Nick, I got your name today from JoAnne Cobb in Montana. Can you please send me a PM?
Hey Nick,
Since I a live in Oklahoma I would be very interested in your results when you get this put together! Here are some of the trails I have been able to find info on:
McGee Creek National Scenic Recreation Area – http://wakefieldwanderings.com/2010/04/mcnsra-guide/
Witchita Mountain Wildlife Reserve (Which Phil already mentioned) – http://www.fws.gov/southwest/refuges/oklahoma/wichitamountains/backcountry.html
The Ouachita Trail(Also mentioned by Phil) – http://www.friendsot.org/about_the_trail
Tulsa, OK: Boardstand – Old Military Road Loop – http://bp2.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip.aspx?tripId=506925
Hope these help.
The Butterfield Trail in Arkansas is a good one too.
Thanks for the great info.
I thought I would add a few.
The David Boren Trail at Beavers Bend
Robbers Cave Trail
Is there any backpacking allowed in the Quartz Mountains?
One days drive away,
The Pecos Wilderness
Gila Wilderness
Any in Kansas or Texas?
Thanks
There are numerous day hiking trails in the Quarts Mtns but the only camping is in the public campgrounds around the lake unfortunately.
Arkansas has a number of great hikes. I'd stay out of the woods here between mid May and late September unless you're just into dozens of tick bites.
Outside of the Butterfield, Ouachita Trail, and Ozark Highland Trail there is the Weddington Trail, Caney Creek/Buckeye Trail, and Eagle Rock loop in the western part of Arkansas.
Hobbs State Park is rocking if you bring your guns!
Enjoy our woods and get to know a hill billy. You wont regret it.
I'm also a big fan of Palo Duro just south of Amarillo, TX.
