What's the ideal temperature range for wearing the Backpacking Light Beartooth Merino Wool Hoody?

Really, Gabriel, there are as many different answers to that question as there are backpackers.

The best way to find out the ideal temp range for you is simply to wear it in various temps and see what works.

I agree Gabriel, that is a rather tough question to answer. Although since you asked I can offer you my personal completely NON-analytical feedback and experience, but that's again, my experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

I've used the BPL Beartooth Hoody(BH)on several trips this year and it's been the base for which my clothing system revolves around. I don't necessarily view the BPL BH as a stand alone piece and I don't think it should be, though it can absolutely function as one under the right weather conditions. I typically wear the BPL BTH for the entire duration of a trip (sleeping, meals, hiking) with the exception of hiking shirtless when it's really warm or when I'm pushing it up a strenuous and long climb in temps above 60F, in that case I typically take all top layers off and put on the dry BPL BTH when I reach the top and recover.

Personal comfort range with BPL Beartooth Hoody:

(*** weather, activity, etc. greatly affect the figures below, AS DOES venting with the neck zipper, use of the hood and thumb-loops, sleeves rolled up.)

BPL BH as stand-alone- 45-75F
BPL BH w/ windshell- 40-55F
BPL BH w/ Montbell UL Down Inner Parka- 30-40F
BPL BH w/ Montbell UL Down Inner Parka + windshell- 20-40F

FWIW, for my style of hiking and exertion level, I use the BTH from high 30s-mid 50s.

Thanks… it should work perfectly then. Now I just need the BPL store to have one in stock.

Gabriel,

It's an excellent garment to invest in for backpacking. You might try posting a WTB in the Gear Swap forum…. waiting for BPL to restock the BPL Beartooth Hoody could take some considerable time, items don't typically go back into stock very quickly and summer may come and go before that happens.

When it comes to Backpacking Light branded gear we focus on a particular set of products, have them manufactured, and then focus on another set of products. We are a small company and as such can't afford to have all of our signature lines in stock at one time unfortunately.

At this time we are focusing on our Cocoon insulated clothing, a freshly designed Vapr bivy sack, our new Absaroka backpack, a new 240g/sm sleeping quilt, and an updated line of Firelite titanium cookware.

Our design team is currently reviewing the Beartooth Merino Wool Hoody (as well as our UL Merino Wool line) considering design, color, and size changes. There is no timeline for bringing the Beartooth Hoody back in stock at this time however.
