Hi folks,

Good morning all.

My first post on here.

I am on the market for a new sleeping bag for 3 season use in the UK and Europe and I have it narroed down to a WM Megalite or a PHD Mimim 300 but then I saw a WM Caribou MF going very cheap in the UK. I checked the specs on both and the biggest differnce is the Caribou's constuction. I have a feeling the Megalite would be a much warmer bag and the better buy.

Any thoughts,

Stephen

I think the Megalite would be a warmer choice because it doesn't have sewn-through baffles. I had a Caribou, but I found it to be not quite warm enough (I'm a cold sleeper). I now have a Megalite, but I haven't actually tried it yet, so I can't give a report.

I used a Caribou on my AT thruhike the entire time. I think it's one of the best bags ever built. It doesn't have a draft tube though, so if you're going to be pushing the temp limit, you better be inside an enclosed shelter.

Hi there,

Thanks for the information. I can get the Caribou a lot cheaper than the Megalite but I think the Megalite is the better bag.

Thanks,

Stephen

I have a Caribou and have found it to be an excellent bag. The temp. rating is conservative which is typical of WM. The bag also has a good DWR for dealing with the morning dew. I have cowboy camped with it several times and never had a problem.

Thanks Thomas,

Do you find you get cold spots from the stitch through construction.

Thanks,

Stephen

I love my WM Caribou bag. Great construction, super roomy and very lightweight. I think the 35 deg rating is about right. I've never been cold in this bag but then again I use a 20 deg bag if the temps are expected to drop below freezing.

The Megalite is definitely going to be a warmer bag just given it's baffle construction and additional down. If you are trying to stretch one bag for all of your backpacking needs, then I'd go with the Megalite as you could use this in a wider range of temps. If you already have a cold weather bag and are looking for a second bag, then save some dollars and go with the Caribou.

I used this bag for a few years and regret selling it. I wouldn’t push it too far beyond the temperature rating. This is especially true if you aren’t in an enclosed shelter. Used as rated its really hard to beat the quality, weight and value of this one!

I love mine… the microfiber shell is more water resistant and breathable than the shell on the extremelight series

No I have not had any problems with cold spots. But I have not pushed it much past it's stated rating. I think the lowest I have had it is 28*.
