…I now know my boxer-briefs weigh 2.875 oz
That's right. I am sitting at my desk weighing every piece of gear I have and imputing it into a spreadsheet. This is fun right? :)

Welcome to the club.
Actually, if you're serious about your pack weight, what you're doing is one of the most important things you can do, all nerdiness aside. The only other thing I can think of that is more important is having the KNOWLEDGE about your gear and how to properly handle the wilderness in which you'll be.
Yup, this is fun. At least I think so.
Are they cotton? :)
Maybe try a thong? Got to be an ounce or two lighter….
It would be good to remove every other strand of elastic from the waist band. You could easily cut out a gram or two.

Boxers? On the trail? Why even bother?
Zero weight.
"Boxers? On the trail? Why even bother?"
Prevention of skid marks.

Seams chafe on pants. In hot weather, good seamless wicking underwear is needed. Commando ain't fun.
Especially in hot weather, myself.
Underwear are just reusable and washable substitutes for toilet paper, right?
And zippers are abrasive!
Commando might be "cool and light" but comfortable is high on my list of necessities.

I take the middle ground. I wear running shorts with a built in liner. Shorts and undies in one. Plus they double (triple?) as swimming trunks for us modest folks.
At 5.6 oz they're the best compromise between my UL-commando dreams and the reality that I don't like going commando.
You could save more weight by trimming out the liner (fewer seams and no scary zipper in running shorts), replacing the string with Spectra, removing the reflective logo… :)

Mike S, the next step is diving into your gear with a scissors to cut off all those heavy labels and excess straps… then you'll know you've TRULY become an UL nerd.
GoLite Ridge Runners (2008) weigh 3.3oz, includes a built in liner. Very breathable but supportive, a little too supportive for me actually. The old Marathon shorts were similar weight with a coolmax liner.
The current incarnation is much heaver, 4oz, but still certainly better than lugging around almost 3oz just for underwear.

Maybe start with punching holes through his boxers — prolly can whack off 1/3 of the weight! More comfy and airy too. And who's gonna know, right? :)

When you start cutting, keep everything you cut off in a ziplock bag. I have a zip lock bag of tags, straps, and trash I have cut off that now weighs 50 g. Unfortunately my tag/trash bag is incomplete b/c I didn't start saving them from the beginning.
When people (justifiably?) make fun of me for cutting extra garbage off stuff, I hand them my collection and tell them they are welcomed to pack it if they want.

"Underwear are just reusable and washable substitutes for toilet paper, right?"
Not if you are a member of the "say no to toilet paper" crowd.
I love my boxers just the way they are!
My old Kelty Gunnison 2 served me extremely well for 4 years but it weighed in at 6 lbs(inc stakes + matching ground cloth)! My new Lunar Duo that weighs in at 3 lbs 1 oz (6 MSR Groundhog stakes & 2 mil plastic groundsheet included).
I am already looking at new packs. My Aether 70 is great but I think it is time to get something lighter/smaller for 3 season use.
