I just brought mine to my local dry cleaners. They told me that they wash down sleeping bags a lot. They don't dry clean it, they just wash it with special soap. I get it back tomorrow and can report on how it went. It only costs $20.
For some reason I thought there were wizards in the Seattle area.
I don't really care where the bag goes, as long as they know what they are doing.
A long time ago, cleaning them in "Stoddard Solution" was the way it was done…. but kerosene is not very good for down.
So although "doing it all the time" is good, doing it Right is better. And SOAP is a key word.
Try "Rainy Pass"
Greg, where are you in Colorado? If it's Boulder, there's a great guy named Ron Simonds that owns Boulder Mountain Repair. He moved out of Boulder to Louisville a year or so ago. He not only does great gear repair, but he's set up to properly clean down and synthetic bags/clothing. You can google him for contact info.
Edit–He moved to Lafayette (120th St, south of S. Boulder Rd.)
Call your local REI. Many provide professional bag washing service. The REI here in LA charged me $19. Well worth it IMO.
Gary,
That will work.
I'll get in contact.
Thanks.
Got my sleeping bag back. Seems like they did an excellent job. Significantly better than what I've been able to do on my own and comparable to the professional wash that was done on it when Marmot sent it to be washed by their service. I don't know whether oils were stripped from the down, ruining it, but I don't really care. The point of washing the bag was to remove oils (my own), and the down now lofts very nicely.
I think I've gotten over my fear of dry cleaners cleaning my high quality down products. I'd do it again. Perhaps if I had a near new $700 bag I might send it to Seattle to get cleaned, but for my well abused gear, doing it locally is great.
