Hello all gear masters out there. It's come time to buy a new tent and would love some advice.
The preamble – my wife and I just spent a month hiking the first 2/3 of the GET – awesome trail – but have become completely fed up with our tent – a old pretty much worn out GoLite Hex3. The biggest problem is it's not quite big enough for us – I'm 6'6'' and she is 6' – so it's always a trade off between a head against one wall or the feet against another. I've loved this tent for the last 7 years and have used it everywhere – but it's time for a new home.
I had my mind set on a MSR Dragontail – love the space and love the hoop design and honestly just didn't know of any other tents like it. But after a couple of days of internet research have found a lot of options.
Currently I've kinda switched gears and really dig the Stephensen 3R with side windows – but then there is the price tag. Checked out the Hilleberg but they seem too heavy and don't have the side windows – though very very strong.
So this where I'm at now. I'd love any input to other tents of this type that are out there I might be missing. I'm willing to carry the extra weight to get a bit more of a real tent – I'd like a floor and a lot of space – as such it seems like the hoop is the best option. Would also love to have just one tent that I can use in all different environments – headed to north India this summer but will be back in the Southwest next Spring.
So oh gear masters out there – any thoughts for a tired hiker looking for a new home?
