I am not sure this is the right spot for this but looking for good gear packing software for my new Ipad. I found one app called The Backpacker Checklist. It looks like you can check amount of items packed, status of importance, along with weight totals for a trip.bpcheck 1bpcheck 2

Anybody fined better checklist apps? There are so many I don't know if I want to get one dedicated to bp if there is something that will do chores, groceries, bp and car camping etc. Any other trail or hiking guides that are worth looking at. I have an ipad so taking these in the woods won't work so will I only have the wifi version.
I also hope BPL comes out with a mag version for the ipad.I can't log in through the ipad only on the computer this is a big disappointment.

I would think you could do pretty much the same thing with Bento if you have that. I'll have to try it and see what I can come up with.

Imagine a BPL Gear List Maker. It would have a database of popular gear, and a user could "pack" the gear they wanted for the trip. Each gear item could have info about weight, price, materials, photo and so on, as well as a link to its review page and retailer. If your gear item isn't listed, you could add it to the database. If information isn't true, you could change it.Lastly, it could take the "pack list" and export it to excel.

I think I could build a flash skeleton in a day, but it would rely on the community to build the database by using it to make their gear list. Also, no iPhone support.

I know this thread is about iPhone stuff, but I think this could be an interesting product, and iPhone support could come later.

Also, what if you could save and share your gear lists, so you can browse other's list within the app? It would certainly solve the problem of non-standard gear lists and improve readability.

Bento is a 'lightweight' database app, made by the folks who make Filemaker Pro.

Actually, this looks like a really nice app. Just downloaded it today. I can keep both my wife and my gear together in the master list, and then create separate trips, such as "Yosemite – John" and "Yosemite – Bonnie) for the same trip. This will make handling shared items easier (for example, when i hike solo I use her smaller backpack, but when we both hike I use a bigger backpack. I can just have both backpacks in the master list and select which one to use for that trip). I like that you can list the location of the items, which should be particularly helpful for filtering then things I need to get at the grocery store just before the trip. This should make customizing my favorite food items easy. I also like the trip history, which will help me compare what I've brought in the past.

Best of all, I can make changes during the trip. In the past, I'd have to scribble notes, and then come home and input the changes into my spreadsheet. Often these changes were specific to that type of trip. Plus, more than once I have forgotten to update my spreadsheet, and I then forget all those amazing gear change ideas I had on the trail. With this app, I can make the changes right in the field, by changing the "Need it," "Good to have had," and "Did not need" statuses. The "Maybe" status will be helpful for gear I might need (i.e. bring it in the car) but it is dependent on the pending forecast just before the trip.

I remember a few years back BPL having a spreadsheet contest for checklists. All of the useful ones were rather complicated and required a more thorough understanding of Excel, and with the simple ones you had to be careful not to duplicate or delete your primary data, particularly if you change the gear and food lists for each trip.

This phone app seems to solve a lot of these problems, and gives you the flexibility to update your lists when at the grocery store, the gear store, or on the trail.

Things I would like to see improved:

1) I really like how you can tag both the category AND the container. I usually sort my lists based on how I pack them; therefore what goes on the top of the list is what goes in the bottom of the pack. But I know most people sort by type of gear. This app let's me have both; I can look at all of my clothing and my wife's clothing at once, yet I can specify that my insulating jacket is contained in my waterproof stuff sack.

What I would like to see is the ability to organize/filter by container. This way I could create a basic list based on category, but then when it comes time to verify I have everything, I can check off that each bag and stuff sack has everything it needs before I zip it up and call it complete.

2) Export to Excel/data backup program. You can post your list to their website and then copy/paste into a spreadsheet app, but this seems like an odd workaround to backup your data.

I definitely get the sense that this was designed by a backpacker for backpackers, and I would be interested to heat what others think about this app. It might be nice to pull together some user tips specific to the lightweight backpacking community and see if we can get them submitted to the developer.

I've had a bit more time to fiddle with the app, and I think I understand the container feature a little better. Basically, you want to have one of your categories be something like 'bags,' and in that category you list your backpack, stuffsacks, pockets, ziplock bags, vials, etc. Then, under the other categories (for example, clothing), you would tag the clothing item with one of the items in the 'bags' category (for example, waterproof stuff sack). This way, when it comes time to pack, you would click on each of the containers, one by one, and check to see what needs to be packed in each container.

Right now the container tag won't list the quantity of the item, so for example if you want to tag tent stakes as having a stuff sack container, and then view these in the stuff sack item, it will only list "tent stake,' not 6 tent stakes. However, a quick reply from the developer stated that he will work on implementing this, as well as indicating on the main page which items are containers for other items.

So that takes care of my request #1. As for request #2, I emailed the developer about a backup option, and within hours he added a CSV download option on the website where you can send your data. This will make it very easy to backup the data and transfer it to other programs/spreadsheets if needed.

This is looking more and more like a really useful app. This weekend I am going to try and import all of my gear and food, and see how it handles everything. I'll try and post some screenshots if I am successful.
