I have seen lots of threads from guys making their own bivy's…I would like to try but am unsure of where to get the materials from??? I am in Alberta and wondered if any of you knew where i can buy material and the zippers to make a bivy?

My criteria would be…

Reasonably light

Long…I am 6' 4"

Compact

Reletivly cheap

Any info would be great, thanks.

OWFINC.com has 1.1 and .9 nylon, 1.3 and 1.9 silnylon, no-see-um mesh and zippers in many sizes. Thru-hiker.com has stuff too.

As I had reported previously, I sewed my own. Coated nylon bottom and Momentum top. Two zippers. Done.

Plus, I had never sewn a stitch prior to December.

I'm getting my stuff from thru-hiker.com. Momentum top, 1.3 sil bottom, nanoseeum top 1/3. One zipper, where the netting meets the Momentum.

Epic might be a better top fabric, depending on how much rain you expect. Available at owfinc.com and probably other places, but it's almost twice as heavy.

So I went to the local sewing shop and asked if they had any waterproof material…after they finished giving me funny looks they said they had water resistant material…

They have rolls of "Nylon Taffeta", is this waterproof or water resistant? My first bivy I bought was taffeta nylon and I am wondering if its the same and also if it would work for a cheap bivy for my first MYO project?

Thanks,

Mike
