For those of you who are interested, they make a 12.5 inch version .. that will lay on its side, horizontally, in most of the bigger packs…

I can easily get a weeks worth of food, coffee, etc inside one of these. … And, oooooh .. is it light !!!

FYI .. I just rec''d mine and it fits "perfectly", on top of my sleeping bag, in my arcteryx Altra 75 pack.. Much easier to pack !

Scott,
Do you mean 9" diameter by 12.5" height?

And, as it does not appear on the Wild Ideas site, is it a phone only deal?

Thanks

They will cut you any length longer than 8". I suppose you could have a 9×32" Bearikade if you wanted.

That being said, I'm not sure that any of the custom options are NPS approved, but I can't imagine any ranger would would get out their measuring tape – well most rangers at least.

Yeah, just email them. They are great to work with. I went the other direction with the tiny Scout model that is not on the site either.

I have a Weekender too. They are awesome bear cans. I just have to watch mine to make sure Lori does not borrow it while I am away from camp…

Thanks for the info. I was suspicious they would not make one less than 8″. They say the reason they use 9″ tube is so that a bear cannot get a jaw lock on it. Making one shorter than the Scout would defeat that, it seems to me.

Google for “Bearikade custom size”. One of the links is a Wild-Ideas link about customization. It is both entertaining and informative.

One thing it says is that they can, and will, make any length up to six feet long. If you want one that just fits comfortably cross-wise in your canoe, you can get one.

I decided awhile back to reverse-engineer some numbers of theirs:

* When I looked at their pricing, the algorithm seemed to be that the price is about $100 + $12.50 per inch. (Assume Scout was dropped $5 to be just below $200)

* As near as I could figure, weight seems to be about 1.5 oz per inch of length, plus one pound for the two ends.

* A less precise figure is that their estimates of the number of days’ food one will hold seems to be about 100 cubic inches per day.
