any thoughts on carrying Grivel Air Tech crampons? i will have them in the Sierra soon, and whatcha think about carrying them in/on a pack? they aren’t all that sharp, but not sure i want them just jammed down in a vapor trail. thoughts on strapping them on, or a light pouch to strap on and store them in?

[Old Wrangler voice] “Well, in th’ ol’ days, we usta…”

Mountaineering packs used to have crampon patches with some grommets and a string of some sort to strap your crampons down with the points out. This was very effective in making sure somone didn’t follow you too closely and step on your heels as they were looking into a hiking version of an Iron Maiden bouncing up the trail in front of them. It was even more effective going down hill :) If you turned around fast, you could slice a hiking buddy in nice little bite size peices for the bears. Of course you got the crampon patch whether you wanted one or not.

You can get rubber point covers for some crampons and they make reinforced bags to carry them in too– kinda heavy.
I would try a Tupperware/Rubbermaid plastic food container. Cheap, easy to get, keeps the dirt/moisture away from your other gear– quiet too.

I use a piece of 1/4″ closed cell blue foam about 16″ x 16″. Face the crampons point to point and wrap them in the foam and secure with a couple of short straps. The foam makes a nice pad to sit on while you are putting them on too. I have put this crampon roll in my Golite speed with no problems.
