You can use things like the Coolpix 4500 to compensate for exposure on panoramas and use it's panning mode to line things up , but having looked into this over some time in the Coolpix line with a Fisheye and Wide Angle adapter I'd ask yourself how much panning means to you. I find that shots with a wide angle are more accessible for most viewers. There is tons of stuff on Ebay given the shipwreck of Real Estate Tours using Kaidan stuff etc. but all of this depends on your desire to carry stuff , what you consider worth risking, and shooting style. I know two very competent shooters around here who never shoot RAW despite the fact that they have it and even own multiple camera shops. I learned what I know in China shooting with a Coolpix 880. Shooting for over a year as much as 400 shots a week at Fine I learned that my best friend was my wide angle adapter, my second my Velbon 343E tripod, after that the 3X tele, and most of all Photoshop 7. I bought a Canon S90 in January because Nikon has just broken my trust and I love shooting Street. But if I was hitting China again or rough trails or water then I'd be back to the 880 . Weighs the same as the S90. Macro is better. To be fair Chinese lens adapters for $18 bucks may let me run lenses on the s90. My brother toasted a Pany in Costa Rica to water and actually had extended the warranty. But anyway my first Q is REZ. Do you need more than FINE? If not enjoy the great lenses , build , battery life etc. of this nice antique stuff. Probably soon to be resurrected like Svea Stoves for a reason.

I have stich assist on my Canon G9 camera. But to be honest, using that mode and the related Canon software doesn't produce panoramic phots that are as seamless as what I get with using the automege function in PhotoShop CS4. If you are going to use an aftermarket software to do it, you don't need to use a special Panorama mode on your camera. I've gotten good results even when I forgot to lock the exposure between shots.
I have a canon SX120 IS and like it a lot. As some of the other folks have pointed out, the "wide angle" end of the zoom lens could be a bit wider but all in all I am quite happy with it – YMMV of course. It takes aa batteries, which was the main reason I purchased it, as this allows me to use lithiums in the winter and carry spares that I can also use with my headlamp..
They are around $220 when Costco has the special, lens goes to 25 MM has an 8X optical zoom (Which is my favorite part) and does video in HD. It is almost as small as the Canon, not sure of the weight.
