Hey all,

I have the MLD Prophet 30 and I love it… but I found I could just barely fit all my gear in it… a few more cubic inches would be nice! Does anyone know of the 2000 ci of the Gossamer Gear G6 includes or excludes the pocket?! Is the main compartment of the G6 a little bigger???

I’m guessing, but 12 * 24 * 5.25 = 1512 cu in. … I’d say that the pocket adds about 500 cu in. and the main bag is about 1500 cu in.

Opps! I didn’t notice the sidebar info on the gossamer gear site…

G6: 12″ x 5″ x 23.5″ = 1410ci
MLD30: 10.5″ X 5.5″ X 26″ = 1501ci

However, the G6 says that the height is as measured “to the bottom of the extension collar”… which is another 10” high. The MLD doesn’t specify how the height is determined (although I will measure mine when I get home). So maybe the whipser IS bigger? Alas, the whipser doesn’t come with lash loops on the shoulder straps for water bottles… which is how I carry water. But I guess I could sew some on easy enough. I do like the idea of the extra width. my sleeping bag doesn’t fit horizonally in the bottom of the MLD pack (when using it’s stuff sack for a bit of compression since I’m hurting for space).

Correction: those size specs for the G6 are on the BPL site… not the GG site.

MLD30 is 27″ right to the very top edge of the extension collar… and 20″ to the bottom of the extension collar (which I’ve decided is where the haul loop is sewn on). So the Whisper may have a bit more breathing room. To recap…

MLD P30 (as measured): 10.5″ x 5.5″ x 20″+7″
GG G6 (according to BPL): 12″ x 5″ x 23.5″+10″

Bear in mind of course the Ron makes all his packs himself… by hand… and is often making tweaks and improvements… so don’t take my measurements as gospel. Also, I don’t know how a rolltop would compare to a cord lock top… i.e… even tho’ the G6 had a taller extension collar… you may need more spare fabric to be able to close it.

Got this today from Gossamer Gear…

Figuring the capacity of a pack like this is a bit tough. It’s constructed as a rectangle but in reality it’s part cylinder when it’s packed. That said here’s what it measures.

Main pack is 12x25x5 which is 1500cui. Extension collar is another 10 inches which gives another 600 but because of the roll top it’s only possible to use about ½ of that. There is a “tube” sewn in the top so you could thread some line in there for a pull top which would give you a bit more volume.

The outside pocket is 12×13 and fairly narrow so you’d get maybe 300 cui out of that.

Short answer – the 2000 cui includes everything but you could push it a bit past that if you get a bit inventive with it.

Thanks, I hope that’s not too confusing

Ok… I just got my G6… and I have to say… subjectively speaking… just by looking at it… this thing is HUGE compared to the MLD Prophet 30. The Prophet 30 is a nicer, more “finished” pack… with it’s 3-D wicking mesh shoulder pads… daisy chains on the straps, lashing loops, oxford bottom, tougher material, mesh pocket panel, ice axe loop… etc. etc. etc… but the G6 is definitly rommier. No question. I’m gonna take out my last gear list (for which I used the MLD 30) and see how it all fits in the G6.
