Anyone have any experience with these? I’m thinking about picking up a set, although I’m wondering if MSR even sells them anymore, since all the online retailers who carry them are out of stock. Also, I weigh 210lbs (that’s why I have a hard time calling myself a lightweight backpacker), so if they’re flexy or fragile for you, they’ll probably snap under me. Thanks.

PS- Like an idiot, I posted this before looking for a BPL review… which I just found. So, if anyone has any *additional* experience with these poles, I’m all ears. After reading the review, I’m thinking of springing for a set.

I believe these poles are made from MSR by Komperdell. I had a pair of the Komperdell ones. I’m not sure if they are exactly the same as the MSR ones or not.

I really liked them, but the locking mechanism was horrible. They slipped easily, but worse the mechanism failed to lock properly on both poles by the third use such that the bottom section of the pole would pull out regularly.

I would stay far away from these.

I have the MSR branded ones (overland carbon), and they’re fine. Took me a little while to figure out that I needed to turn them by more than just half a turn if I wanted them to stay locked (they’d slip a few centimeters shorter every few miles before, but an extra twist around now and the lock stays), and I can’t get the treking basket back off of one of the poles (which is irritating but not a realy problem), but otherwise they’re great.

I have a pair of Komperdell C3 poles and I’ve never had any problems at all with them slipping… as long as I tighten them well.

Sometimes the lock spins before catching… but that’s easy to avoid once you get used to them (just don’t losen them too much… and of they do fail to catch… just pull them out so half of the lock is exposed… and hold the lock with a finger and give it a 1/4 turn or so… then re-insert and it will catch).

Nathan… brute force will get that basket off eventually… keep trying… and then… just cut a teeny tiny bit off the edge of the basket… the curved bit where it catches… they will come on and off easier but won’t twist off on their own. By teeny… I mean just a slight nibble… like… 1/16″ of an inch of plastic.
