Hi guys,

Im in the market for a lightweight down vest, size small, to wear hiking in the cooler months and even around town on cooler days.

Those who know me by now, know i like the cottage industry.
I had a few vests in mind:
-ff helios/hyperion vest
– triple zero down Antza (I really like the hood!)
– WM Flight/Flash Vest
– PHD Minimus down vest

now, i know there are some good offshore made brands too…

-patagonia sweater vest
-montbell alpine down vest
etc etc etc

what are your thoughts?
im open to any information or suggestions! especially about the triple zero down…cos i havnt heard anyone talk about that brand on these forums!

Hi Siggy, have you checked out the Nunatak Skaha and Skaha Plus vests? Very spendy, but the weight is about the same as the triple zero vest, but with about twice as much down. Fully baffled, hood and pocket optional. Not to mention custom-made to your dimensions, with a level of craftsmanship as high as anything on the market.

Western Mountaineering is my favorite.

It is so lightweight that I have to keep it anchored to the ground to keep it from floating away.

i have a skaha and my wife too

i would rate nunatak sewing skill above triple zero ( my wife and i use 2 triple zero sleeping bag)
but when comparing weight you have to take into account the sizing.

My Skaha + M is a bit too tight to my taste i should have bought an L wich is unusual for me for an US/Canadian brand.

My wife is between XS and S, she choosed an S and the sizing is great for her.

Western Mountaineering Flight Vest (8oz for XL). I have had mine for 5 years and it still keeps me warm– A great piece of UL clothing.

yeah the Nunatak is nice. but the zipper is only half length, i want a full length zip.

how is Sir Joseph gear? ive never heard of it before.

If you're buying it new, Tom will put a full length zip in if that's what you want. That's one of the great things about Nunatak gear, it's fully customizable.

Like Bob said, so light it's easy to lose.

It's very minimally featured, which is part of what I like about it. It's great as an extremely lightweight bit of extra warmth when backpacking/hiking, and doubles as a reasonably smart looking extra bit of insurance under a nice-looking casual coat for long days into evenings if you're traveling to other cities in the cold. I used it that way in Sydney when I was there last August; it looked quite smart under a 'sports' coat. In other words, it's 'un-technical' enough looking that you can get away with it layered with regular clothing.

thanks for the feedback fellas!

Yeh, im looking of Hermits Hut at the WM vests, because they still have free international shipping until the 1st of May (Im in Australia)….only thing is im tempted to buy more gear from there!

I'm just wondering….is it justifiable, paying $200USD more thank the WM Flight Vest or FF Helios/Hyperion for the Nunatak Skaha Vest Plus???

They are all made in the US, of similar build quality (so i hear)….and FF is a custom job like Nunatak

yeah i saw that comparison already, its very interesting.

but has anyone done a similar comparison including the nunatak…? or phd? or other brands?
