hi group,
I’ve searched the archives on this topic and not really found an answer. I have an old, full-length Z-rest, which serves me very well as I’m 120 lbs and so don’t compress the egg crating too much. I’m looking to shorten it for weight saving purposes, however, I’m having a hard time conceiving of how to use it with my GoLite Gust pack. I’ve used the Gust loaded with an inflatable 3/4 length pad, which was serviceable but the inflatable pad wasn’t stiff enough and felt like it would collapse under additional weight–also, I like my Z-rest better. I don’t want to go out and spend the money on a ridgerest or other easier-to-roll frame, so I’m looking for advice and suggestions on how to get my Z-rest to serve as a virtual frame for my Gust. It doesn’t wrap around into a neat cylindrical shape, and due to the contoured shape of the Gust’s foam back pad pocket it doesn’t fit well within that pocket in folded-up form.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I use a short Z-rest in a GoLite Trek. I fold the pad so it forms two equal stacks and put that against my back. My sleeping bag and other items are in waterproof stuff sacks arranged in two vertical stacks with odds and ends in the spaces. A couple tweaks on the compression straps and it’s all stable.
