Two weeks ago I won came in second during a (very informal) rando race (skin up, ski down), and as a prize got a free night at the Altoona Ridge Lodge near Princeton, MT. Hidden up at 7500' in the Flint Creek Range, it was an interesting departure from actual camping. I had a huge, 30 lb pack on the way in (for an overnight!), but most of the weight was not in our two sleeping bags, spare clothes, slippers, or swimsuits (for the sauna), but rather in beer and luxury foods.
The Flint Creek is one of those lowish, little ranges in west Montana that fly below the radar, only noticed by a few elk hunters and hikers. The bonus is that for skiers of modest ability, with no inclination to venture into big mountains, the skiing is superlative.
We had a good time. Sometimes it's nice to live high on the hog of human luxury.
