I always include a "Rationale" Column in my gear list in which I write the reasoning behind my gear choice for each item. This allows me to refine my gear list. It helps me decide what to leave at home by spotting items that are unnecessary for the trip.
You'd be surprised how much this helps. Try it.

I have to answer WHY or it stays behind.
