Want to use my return on a tent but definitely not going overboard since this will be mainly a kayaking tent.

Or the redesigned half dome 2 tent (which was popular but now it has poor reviews)? http://www.rei.com/product/794294
Both weigh about the same.
Reading the comments, I find many of them downright inane — and the complaints about the redesigned fly and pole system being "complicated" are subjective. If I were you, I would give the tent a try — and not just rely on those comments — esp. when REI has a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
