I have a multi-day bicycle trip on converted railroad from DC to Pittsburgh. I am looking for lite weight rain jacket and pants that will work for a bicycle. Looking for opinions for highly breathable gear.

Drop Stoppers (sold on BPL) seem to breath pretty well — certainly better than my Marmot Precips. They’re also very light and inexpensive.

On the downside, they are somewhat fragile but should hold up well to road biking. I’d avoid them though if you’re planning mountain (i.e. off-road) biking.

the trail is a mixture of gravel, rocks, and mud along the C&O and on the former WM grade, it’s gravel, mud, rocks, pavement, and wood. there are several tunnels in PA you have to go over, so you’ll want something that will take some abuse if it’s raining in the Casselman River valley.

when i used to race, we used beekeeper jackets and baby oil on our legs – works really well. there are waterproof breathable booties for your shoes and you can get rain pants and jackets on-line from Performance and Bike Nashbar.

I just finished that trip with Adventure Cyclists. I wore my Red Ledge pants and an older bike rain jacket by Nike that kept me pretty dry, but I needed something more underneath to keep me warm. The downpours were pretty cold. Get foot covers as well or use plastic bags. It was hard peddling in that slop. Lots of puddles and mud. Great ride, all in all.
