We know how much gas in a canister we use for our style of cooking 30 grams per day using a heat exchanger pot maybe 40 with an ordinary pot.
We are being forced to use our whisperlite in Morocco because of uncertainty as to whether we can buy any small gas canister at all. It is years since we last used it. If I take 1000ml of petrol how many days do people think that will last us, using an ordinary pot probably?Mar 30, 2010 at 1:47 am #1592303Derek
The heat of combustion of 1 litre of petrol (gasoline for US readers) is 32MJ and this is equivalent in terms of heat produced to 700g of gas.
If you normally allow 40g gas per day, and assuming similar stove efficiency, this is equivalent to 57ml petrol so 1 litre should last 17 days.
However you need to prime this stove. You could use petrol but that will reduce the number of days that 1 litre will last, or esbit tablets. Also bear in mind that the stove efficiency is reduced if you turn the flame up to 'full blast'.

I ended up thinking 15 days, reduce the number of starts, keep it low. -
