In Ray Jardine's old book, he outlines a very simple way to attach space-blanket mylar material to the top of an umbrella so that it is desert-worthy.

Has anyone tried to do this with a *folding* umbrella? (The kind that folds onto itself.)

    Thanks!

Are there any folding umbrellas that would be strong enough to make it worth the hassle?

You should take a look at the Golite Chrome Dome

Trace the umbrella outline onto a space blanket and trim it so there are sections that overlap the perimeter enough to fold over. Hold it all together with the smallest plastic paper clips. I don't think you would have much luck permanently attaching mylar to a folder. It would need to be sectioned and glued, leaving a lot of edges to come loose.

I would go with the Golite chrome model or just find a white umbrella.
