For summer in the Sierra I take the lightest long underwear I own just to keep my bag/quilt clean and maybe need if the temps take a wicked drop.

Personally I like the light wool products available over synthetics just for the funk factor.

To me, the one strike against fleece is the bulk. Fleece compresses poorly.

I'm with Ray on this one. Unless you're taking something like a 40 degree bag and depending on the longjohns for warmth I'd use the lightest ones I own. If you were going the real light bag direction, I'd invest in some down leggings, which are warmer and more compressible.

I have a 15* bag so not too worried bout that. more for outside the tent stuff, cooking, hanging, scrambling, relieving.

What do you put on when u get to camp? long undie under zip pants? under rain pants? or just long undie?

Silk long undies – 8 oz total — plus a pair of light weight liner socks. Silk is comfy and helps to keep body sweat and oils away from the sleeping bag.

I've got silk wear for sleeping, but my REI brand silk is the stretchy, looser weave type–sort of like nylons–not the stuff you'd see regular shirts made out of. I've been wondering how much these actually keep the oils away, since the fabric is not 'solid.'

Yeah, but weight is what counts. And fleece dries MUCH faster than wool.

I don't put anything more on when I get into camp, just wear my hiking pants. If I am cold I will put my rain shell over them, but really it tends to be the coldest in the Sierra in the mornings. Evenings are usually pretty nice (comparatively. In the morning I just hike hard and fast to warm up, but sometimes have to start in my shell.

Now I do always have a down sweater of some type with me for on top, just nothing for the legs.

(You are talking about summer, right?)
