I was torn between “Winter Hiking” and “Off-Piste” but reading this story made me think most about redundancy and contingencies while winter camping (and secondarily about disaster preparedness around the home front).

A guy’s remote homestead cabin burned down and he stayed in a snow cave and then an improvised shelter for 3 weeks before the State Troopers conducted a welfare check on him.  After a shower and McDonald’s meal, he was interviewed and gave the following account:

Video from the rescue helicopter is the first video on the Troopers’ FB page: https://www.facebook.com/AlaskaStateTroopersOfficial/

Wow. A testament to the human will to live. With a little bit of supplies and the will to live we can go a lot longer than we would think.

thank you for sharing.

And in the dead of an Alaskan winter!

Nobody could have done better and few could have done as well.
