I’m working on filling out my schedule this year with shorter trips I can do on weekends or just by not taking a ton of time off, and I’d love to spend some more time down in Kings/Sequoia. I’m wondering if anyone has recommendations for 3-4 day trips out of the trailheads on the west side of the mountains, preferably a loop but a good out and back wouldn’t be bad either. Looks like I could get out to the Rae Lakes area and back in 4 days but would love to find some good 3 day trips, any ideas? Thanks!

That’s a very popular trip, and you will see lots of people on it…if you can get a permit.
Other options include:
Big Meadow to Jennie Lake, JO Pass, Silliman Pass, Ranger Lake, Seville Lake, and back.
For a more aggressive hike, Up Copper Creek through Volcanic Lakes, and back down Lewis Creek. Tough hike in three days.
From Lodgepole, Cross Country to Moose Lake. then back along the High Sierra Trail
From Mineral King: up to Franklin Lakes, Over Franklin Pass to Rattlesnake Creek, into the Kern, and back. That would give you a work out.
Thanks Paul, some of those look good…don’t know too much about the trailheads on the west side but they’re closer and saves me hours of time versus driving to Onion Valley or something :)
Sam,
If you’re feeling ambitious, I found this today on Andy’s website. 9 section hike/loops in SEKI between 30-60 miles: http://andrewskurka.com/adventures/kings-canyon-high-basin-route/primary-route-section-hikes/
Note Andy heavily cautions these are off-trail route finding courses with class 2 terrain. He said to be conservative on your daily mileage estimates.
Thanks Craig, some of those look like some plans I’ve been thinking about already :) Gardiner Basin, Lakes Basin, etc. Going to have to figure out what the East Fork/Great Western Divide trip is, that looks like it could be in my planning range as well.
Ever feel like you really need a lot more time off of work…
