Hi,
Has anyone who has trekked in either Tibet or Nepal tell me what stove they used, what fuel was available there, things like that. I’m thinking with elevation that alcohol stoves are out, so should I bring my canister stove? I want to go as light as possible, naturally. Somebody said that the MSR Dragonfly would be good as it burns just about anything. Thanks for your help.

Altitude considerations aside, alcohol stoves are probably not a good idea just based on fuel availability. Denatured alcohol might be a tough one to come by in Tibet especially. You could find alternatives but I imagine using less than ideal fuel in a stove with performance already diminished by altitude would be pretty frustrating. If you fly to Lhasa through Kathmandu, Beijing, or Chengdu all three cities have gear stores that stock both canister and white gas stoves and the staff can direct you on where to get fuel. I carry my whisperlite int’l in China.

A multi-fuel stove is recommended. I’ve used XGKs and Whisperlite Internationales. Kerosene is what is most often found. Some of the kerosene I’ve found in the remoter districts of Ladakh, Nepal and Tibet was of a very low grade, probably adultrated and required field stripping and cleaning of my stove on a regular basis. Remember, kerosene is often called paraffin ( an artifact of former British influence) in many parts of the world.
