Dondo,
I'm in southern Colorado. The Grand Canyon is 9 to 10 hours away, depending on roads. If I leave at 6 in the morning, I can get a permit that afternoon, and be IN the canyon the next morning. As long as hike time is a least twice the drive time I consider it a good deal. So I watch the weather, and go.
