I just bought one of the new Nitro 30 sleeping bags and noticed after i cut some tags off (No I did not cut the fabric accidentally) a seam must have been weakened. i now have about a 1/3 of an inch seam separation and have some feathers leaking out. What is the best method to repair this (at the seam) without a sewing machine? What works on this type of fabric? (22D Polyester)

Any particular thread and or needle needed? or better than others?
Thanks.
Sewing by hand is so easy a caveman could do it!
Buy a spool of thread, any kind will do. If it is a color and size similar to the existing stitching, that would be best. 100% Polyester thread is probably best, but for a small repair, it probably doesn't matter. The needle should be sharp. If you aren't used to this, use a thimble so that you can push the needle through easier.
If it is really necessary, purchase and read the book entitled Sewing For Dummies. Skip the chapter on Sewing The Little Black Dress.

Frank,
It may help to use a needle with a slight curvature. Since upholstery needles are usually too thick for UL fabrics, you can just buy a thin hand sewing needle around two inches long and bend it. Use a thread around the same thickness and color of the manufacturers'. High polyester content is best, because all cotton will eventually rot and all nylon can be more difficult to work with. My guess from your discription is that a sewing machine would not work.
If all that sounds too daunting, look for a cottage industry in your area that makes outdoor gear and/or clothing, and they will probably do it. Or anyone handy with a needle and thread. In my area, Wild Things or Ragged Mountain are good. You must have similar small businesses in Arizona.
