I am looking to put together a SUL summer kit for 1-2 day long hikes for the South Western B.C. & PNW area. I have been given a contact e-mail address of a lady who does custom work for GG. I am trying to figure out what options I want to have and need some help. I am thinking of getting a custom built silnylon GG G6 with an external pad pocket that fits the GG Nightlight Torso pad. I am not sure if I want to add side pockets yet. If I did they would most likely be used to carry water bottles. If I pass on that feature I will strap bottles to the shoulder straps. For the people who have carried water like this in the past how has it been? Speaking of shoulder straps would you keep the standard G6 straps or upgrade to the G5 or Mariposa style. I know it will add weight (not much I hope) but should feel a bit more comfortable. Plus the sternum strap would be a bonus. Also should I add a simple waist belt, my max loads would be in the 13lb range or so? Do I really need a hipbelt for such a light pack?

Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

You might also have a look at the Fanatic Fringe Alpine Trail pack. For 2 oz more you get the more durable fabric you want and mesh side pockets.

IMHO you don’t need to switch to the more padded Mariposa shoulder straps, or add a hipbelt. The shoulder straps on the G6 are wide to distribute weight, and LW padding is provided that make them very comfortable. A hipbelt is redundant for carrying just 12-15 pounds, but a LW sternum strap would help to give the pack more stability.

Glen has some variations of his packs in the works, like more durable fabrics and side pockets for the G6, so you might check with him on if/when these might be available.

I love love love love love the water bottles strapped to my shoulder straps. I will never carry water any other way now. This is the best way (to me) to carry water. Love it. I only use 500 mL bottles so they are not so heavy / bulky and not so prone to falling out of the bunge… then I keep an extra liter inside the pack… and just stop when needed to refill the plastic bottles and refill the bladder I keep in the pack.

Hey there Will. Ya I did look at the FF pack and it is nice but I really want a pad pock the will fit the GG Nightlight Torso mat. As too the shoulder straps I was just thinking it would be better because I would have a place to bungee the water bottles like in this pic (it’s the 6th pic in on the slide show).

It is good to know that the G6 shoulder straps work well if I stick with them. I do think you are right on the hipbelt though, I will pass on that. I am aware of Glen’s packs in the works but none of them are a 2000ci pack with pad pocket.

Thanks for all your help WR.

Dave your set up sounds just like what I had in mind. Do you use 2 bungee cords per bottle like the pic I linked?
