Who stocks enough gear for others?

I have a Gregory Whitney that weighs 7lbs 2oz from back in 1999. It's comfortable but no one on BPL would want that lunker. I agree with Justin though. I could not get enough money for it to warrant the trouble of selling it. Maybe I should donate it to a boy scout troop.

I'm new to lightweight backpacking and saying that I just sold a bunch of my old gear on ebay to turn around and buy UL gear, haha. Soon enough though I will be like you all with enough gear to supply many friends.

Not that you asked… but if you've got gear that's just sitting there collecting dust, why not donate it so some poor kid can use it and enjoy the outdoors? Question applies to all — esp. the pack rats among us.

We keep enough gear to outfit out family for all conditions / combination we will go in, and enough gear to equip an extra adult and child for a moderate conditions trip (May-Oct Sierras). We typically either sell other items that have accumulated… or in some cases give otem to folks who need things but don't have a lot of cash like a friends scout troop.

The loaner items are either things that we swap between due to seasons (winter sleeping bag is the loaner), or items that we have specifically retained to equip someone. The items specifically retained are those favored by people transitioning to ultralight (but might not be their yet). For example, the adult loaner pack is the original Aether 60 rather than something lighter.

I have a lot of gear that has been barely used or never used; I can't resist the latest and greatest thing. The problem is I sometimes find something even better before I get to try out my last purchase (thats what I get for buying stuff in winter).

With all the stuff I've bought over the years, I could take 4 extra people backpacking with all my extra gear; 2 of them UL. I suppose I should find a boy scout troop to donate some of this stuff to since I will never use most of it again.

Stock ONE other hiker? HA! I can stock THREE other hikers besides myself. Yeah, sounds ridiculous but some of the equipment is over 10 years old, like my 1970s SVEA 123 stove and SIGG Tourist cookset/windscreen.

Will I sell my 4 lb. REI SoloLite tent to some unsuspecting noob for $40.? Hell yes, and not even feel guilty. (And to think REI had the cojones to call that tent "Lite"!)

Will I sell my Ti skillet to a Ti cultist. YEP! and wish them well. ;)

How about my Caribou Mountaineering summer bag of Primaloft?(now just "Prima" only) Sure, with the disclaimer that it is good only down to 45 F. – if that.

Anyone wanna buy a cool Pur water filter & cartridge? I won't carry THAT weight anymore.

And so it goes – too many unused goodies to mention. Like a puce green EMS day pack my wife won't use.

So maybe I need to put a lot of my stuff up for sale, painful as it may be. (I think I'm having an epiphany here.)
