What's the ideal bug tent / net tent to use with the GG SpinnTwinn tarp?

I've been considering one of the bug shelters from Alpinlite, but a MYOG project would be fun to do too. Would the Ray-way nettent kit work?

I would probably suggest the Alpinlight Bug Tent 1.25 or 1.5, but sure one of the Ray Way Net Tent kits would work too. They just don't look like they have much headroom.

Just received my net tent from Alpinlite this week. Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it looks great.

I have been using the MLD Serenity shelter at 10oz. I can not say enough good things about it….This one is custom for a larger hiker…

The MLD Serenity looks great and it's 2-3 ounces lighter than the alpinlite I was looking at.

Thomas – if you were looking at the 1.25 Alpinlite shelter, it is bigger than the MLD. You should also note that the Alpinlite is seam sealed by Gen from the 'factory' so you need to add a couple of ounces to the MLD version to compare effectively.

Cheers.

If you don't care about having sil panels at the ends (just netting) have a look at the MLD bug bivy as well.

I just wanted to let you know – both awesome products and I am awaiting some gear from MLD right now, actually. But I have a custom Alpinlite inner and the quality is right up there in terms of fit, finish, and functionality.

Ron at MLD is more than glad to make the Serenity with net ends instead of the sil-nylon.

"Ron at MLD is more than glad to make the Serenity with net ends instead of the sil-nylon."

True, but the bug bivy is 5.5 oz and cost $125, while the Serenity is around 8 oz for $135. Size is about the same, though the Serenity is a bit taller. The bug bivy is a 'top loader' while the Serenity is an 'end loader.' Both great products!

I'm in the market for a net tent for my SpinnTwinn and looking for some feedback on the options I've narrowed it down to. I use a long sleeping bag and sometimes bring a large neoair, so would need it to accommodate that. From what I've gathered so far, I can't really go wrong with any of these, but wondering if anyone has any strong opinions about any of them.

Alpinlite 1.25
MLD Serenity
Bearpaw Minimalist 1

Regardless of which I end up choosing, does anyone have any thoughts on the ventilation/weather protection trade offs of the fully netted front and back vs. solid silnylon or cuben….or even half & half.

I only have experience with the MLD Serenity from that list, but I will say one thing: the Serenity's full silnylon panels are nice for breeze prevention. After pitching my tarp, the wind shifted so that it was flowing right through the shelter. Once I climbed into my Serenity and zipped it up , I was fine.

I think Ron has net ends as an option, but I prefer the silnylon ends for keeping the breezes off of me at night.

Chris,
I have a 1.25 Alpinlite with a full silnylon back and 1/2 silnylon front. It weighs 12.5 oz seam sealed with all tie outs. Using it with my SpinnTwinn I am right around 24.5 oz with stakes. I am 5'-9" and weigh 160#. I have a couple of pictures of it on this trip.

which I will be trying out later this month on the Superior Hiking Trail. We'll see what my wife thinks about it. I really like Gen's net tents.
