Hi.
I'm looking at the Patagonia DAS parka. I will be using it as a belay jacket while ice climbing and mountaineering. I've tried a medium from a friend and that felt big. I tried the medium over my shell, wich will be the use of the one I buy. So no city use, climbing first. I'm thinking a small will be sufficient for me. No point in carrying more jacket than I need. I'm 5'10'', 165 and athletic/slim built with no wide shoulders.

My question is how the DAS work for you who downsized the jacket and if you have room for layers? I'm concerned about the sleeve lenght and torso lenght. My sleeves are 31-32 and the lenght from where my neck starts to where a normal jacket stops is 23.

Would be great if someone about my size had any beta on this jacket? They don't sell them here in europe, so can't go to a store and try a size small.

I don't know where you are in Europe Morten, but plenty of stores in the UK sell the Das Parka. I would be aware that the Das Parka has undergone a major facelift this year, and the fit might be different on the latest jackets.

Do you know any websites that sell that?

Do anyone know what facelifts? Fit or just fabric/isolation?

They sell Patagonia, but not the DAS parka. The DAS is not for the european market anymore…

They were a few months ago Morten. I was looking for a belay jacket myself, that's why i remembered. I ended up buying a Wild Things Belay Jacket from their online sale outlet.

Get the Medium. I am slightly taller and a few pounds less than you and I have a small. If (when really…) I get another one it will be a medium. Bigger is nice as a true belay parka.

"Bigger is nice as a true belay parka."

Agreed! I wear large everything in Patagonia and bought my DAS in an XL. Fit over everything I am wearing with little room to spare.

Christopher: So you think the Small is too small for you when you wear a shell under?

It's pretty crucial for me that I get the normal "action suit" under. If there is not room for that, the jacket will be worthless for my use.

Morten,

It's borderline. With a cap1 base, R1 hoody, ascensionist softshell and nothing else it's okay. It's a pain getting the sleeves off over gloves (they're tight at the wrist). If I was wearing a heavier softshell in colder conditions I would definitely want the medium, or if the ice is pi$$ing and I need a thin hardshell over my normal stuff.

I'll make the small work until it wears out or dies from falling ice and then get a medium.

My regular alpine partner has a large and I've worn his. While it's big, it's never been a problem so sizing up to a medium for me is probably good in the future. Plus the medium will give more room for stuffing gloves and crap in the big pockets to dry out/not freeze.

Ok. Think medium is the way to go. Then it's also better when we only bring 1 jacket, fit more people.

How is the Micro puff Hooded jacket? In case I don't get a hold on the DAS. Micro puff is sold in europe, so much easyer to get.

I have the older Hooded Mircopuff and DAS with the Delta fill, both in medium.

Perhaps they have changed the sizing, but my Mircopuff is significantly baggier in fit when compared to the DAS. I can very easily fit a large down vest under the Micropuff, not so with the DAS. Also, as you'd expect, the insulation in the DAS is about twice that of the other jacket.
My DAS is just barely warm enough for winter belay duties in the Northeast US (for me, a skinny guy who gets cold easily). The Micropuff is inadaquate for me when belaying in subfreezing temperatures.

Both have hoods that fit well over a helmet.
