My friend has wide feet and has only been able to find one company that makes EEEE (4E) boots (New Balance). Are there any other options, and if not, are New Balance hiking boots OK?

He doesn't like the idea of using trail running shoes, but maybe he'll reconsider if there are decent ones in EEEE size. Any suggestions?

I wear 14 4E shoes. New Balance/Dunham is all I wear for dress shoes, casual shoes and hiking boots.

That said, the latest offerings from New Balance (1201 and 1500) both seem to be getting good reviews but lots of people are saying that they are undersized in the width department. If you look at the user reviews on NB's website, there are several accounts that say "I typically wear size X, but found I had to go up a length and a width to fit into this shoe. Why is NB's sizing wrong?"

To which NB responds "These shoes must have a more aggressive fit since they are hiking shoes." To which I respond that hiking shoes need to be sized slightly larger since the feet expand massively during the day and the typical user wears thicker socks.

I am at a bit of a loss with NB's current offerings since I am at the extreme upper end of their hiking shoe sizing. I cannot get the shoes any wider, and longer just makes the arch fit poorly.

I feel your friends pain.

Thanks for the info, friend. I did a little Googling and few firms seem to cater to folks with wide feet. Seems like someone would compete with New Balance, or New Balance could improve its offerings.

He'll likely find more choices under labels like Cabela's, LL Bean, Rocky, Danner etc, than brands and models generally marketed to hikers/backpackers. Consider looking outside the box as well towards lightweight hunting footwear.

Love the NB joggers. Very good and comfortable.
Wean him off the boots.

Cheers
