Footwear for hiking in sand

obxcola, the FL Trail crosses Eglin AFB beginning or ending at the trailhead on the westside at Hwy SR 85>>>east trailhead at US 331, approx 44 miles

not sure if this is the info you're looking for or not

I better come out from under my rock. Didn't know there WAS a Florida Trail and now see that not only is there one but it should eventually be over 1000 miles long.

Ticks and chiggers about 10 months a year, Rattlesnakes, cottonmouth moccasins and so forth and so on. Welcome to the lowland South. Way down on the Suwanee River.

The slip and slide of each step is really hard on muscle and tenden. If you can possibly get out and away from deep sand, I would. Sand will make you sore for days afterward, if it's deep, like in an aroyo. From my experience, only solid shoes, as in leather or plastic, with fairly high gaitors, will keep things out of the shoe and even then you're always going to get something in there. I remove my shoes everytime I rest and let my feet breathe and cool off, even dousing them with some water, if there's enough. I wouldn't walk too far in sandles if you're in heavy cactus country and sand can be very abrassive, as you probably know.
