Hi,

I need some advice to buy new pants to hike in wet (continuous downpour) and cold conditions (around freezing). I thought I had found the perfect solution with my pair of ski pants, which:
– are waterproof
– dry quickly
– are moderatly warm, there is no insulation layer but there is a soft lining in addition to the waterproof membrane, which is great to wear next to skin
– have integrated gaiters, ie large pant cuffs, that avoid the rain to flow inside shoes
– are very durable

I'm not sure how breathable the membrane is, it doesn't look like a high tech fabric, but it hasn't been a problem, I guess thanks to the soft interior fabric that wicks the moisture and doesn't let you feel clammy. My pair of pants are quite heavy, almost 2lb, but it's not that much of a problem since I wear them all day anyway.

The problem is that they're quite long, and they've already been shredded and repaired numerous times around the ankles. So are there any hiking pants that have all the qualities of my old pants or should I head again for the ski department ?

Thanks in advance for your help !

Had these out over the weekend for the first time…temp was 10, with windchills of -20F. I didn't wear anything under them, just the Stoic softshell's, and was quite warm. We had about a foot of snow – they didn't seem to get wet, but it was powdery so probably not the best test for water repellency. I think I'll spray them the NikWax softshell water repellent coating before taking them out again.
