On the 9th of this month ,Panasonic took controlling interest of Sanyo Electrics.
That not only gives Panasonic access to solar panels and rechargeable batt technology (Eneloop) but also controlling interest in the largest assembler of quality compact digital cameras.
Looking at what Panasonic has achieved in DSC in the last few years it seem to me that they are now aiming at that N1 spot.

    Frank,

    DSC – ???

    D – digital
    S- ?
    C- camera

I've always wondered about that image prefix.
    Do you know?

    Thanks.

    Super cool? Su-weet?

Actually, it's 'still', opposed to DVC (video)

"I love knowing the minutia behind the scenes."
The founder of Sanyo was married to the sister of the founder of Panasonic.
However in DSC AFAIK there was little or no cooperation between the two.
Sanyo are the major assemblers for brands like Nikon,Olympus and Pentax.
It used to make a lot of the Konica Minolta cameras too. Part of that was a behind the scene cooperation between KM,Sony and Tamron.
(The Sony T and H series were a KM design)
Sony owns around 10% of Tamron and are the major suppliers of the CCDs used by the above brands as well as Canon.
Virtually all of Sony's video cameras use a Tamron made lens.
Tamron is the lens manufacturers for most of the above DSC.
I too find a lot of this stuff interesting, made me smile a lot reading certain comments at DPReview about the "superiority" of a certain brand over another…
